Hello, my name is Dowhan Kim and I work for Luther English as an English tutor.
I detested learning English as a kid.
I remember I couldn't even spell my own name in English until I was in third grade.
Language was never my strong suit and 8-year-old me would have never imagined that this is where I would be as a college student.
I study music at Berklee College of Music but for various reasons, including the pandemic, I am taking a break from school for the time being.
Being a tutor has had me on both the giving and receiving end of education.
Not only have I been teaching students how to use a certain expressions and how to apply them correctly, this job has also been a journey to finding the most effective method of transferring knowledge and good habits to my students.
In order for effective and productive learning to take place, it is imperative that the student has both their ears and eyes open to new information or in other words, the student must be willing to take on new knowledge.
There are various means to invoke motivation in students. Relating the material at hand to a pre-existing interest of the student to draw their attention, giving students specific positive feedback for their engagement, or making the lesson stimulating and exciting with infectious enthusiasm are all approaches I have picked up along the way during this journey.
Every lesson is a puzzle in the way that I am constantly adjusting the right balance of motivating elements to keep the student happy and engaged for that very day while maintaining the functionality of the class.
No two lessons are the same; one day a student is fully engaged with little to no encouragement and the very next lesson he or she is just exhausted from school and wants to go to sleep.
Seeing students laugh and enjoy their time while engaged in class fills me with a warmth that I missed out on during my elementary years stuck in English class.
Hopefully, I have been bringing a learning experience of the same positivity and magnitude to the students as it has been for me.
